Numbers don’t lie and your numbers tell a pretty interesting story. I am still amazed at how many businesses haven’t embraced social media, but they cannot ignore it for long. As a blogger for a few small businesses, it hasn’t been hard to convince people that it is worth their time to invest something today to see results tomorrow. Even if the dollars don’t pour in now, the lack of a social presence at all will hurt those small businesses in the long run.
Terrific data here, Phil. It appears that this information is extremely valuable for B2C companies. Marketing B2B is wholly different. When business prospects are on social media sites, I’ll assume the majority are on downtime, playing games, connecting with friends, etc. not participating in social media for work purposes. Any thoughts on using social media to target B2B prospects?

But Twitter is just one social platform of many. Tweets are just individual messages out of many. When it comes to evaluating the effectiveness of your social media participation, are you evaluating individual tweets, status updates, and comments or the overall experience others have by consuming your content?

I’m not aware of research on the difference between advertising a brand vs. recruitment, but I imagine some of the larger universities with a large social media presence (Syracuse U comes to mind) might have thought about this. You might go to the Facebook page of a few of these schools and ask the question and see what responses you get.

The adoption rates are staggering. For many people the first instinct when they hear some news (like I heard about a friend’s death this week), is to go to social media to share it. If businesses think about their customers like friends and think what would my friends want to hear about today (given that these friends have different interests and needs), I wonder how much more value would come out of SMM.

With the two points i highly agree are that make use of videos more as it is the best way to get information and to understand it in less time. And the second one is that developing mobile friendly website as now in the upcoming time more people will make use of mobile to get the detail about the product for the online shopping. But with the mobile friendly website be sure for the local presence of your business as people will first look for the local area for their product. And thanks for other useful points also.
What makes sense to me is to think of social media marketing as offline world of mouth marketing and relationship building. Smart businesses know this is the best kind of longterm relationship they can build with customers. Sometimes I think the technology interferes with how people perceive the value. They can’t compare smm to SEO or Adwords.
In your article how important is the social media marketing for the business,as every third or fifth person is using social sites on their mobile and as shown in your research percentage is growing. So marketers should take advantage of this type of marketing and your article will give an information to the marketers where to target their customers.
